Essential Questions

Why is it important to identify safety issues and to safely operate equipment utilized in the classroom?
It is important to identify safety issues and how to use equipment so that no one harms his/herself (or others!) while working.

How do interpersonal and employability skills affect both your everyday life and your future?
These skills are good basic life skills, and the quality of the employability and interpersonal skills one possesses ultimately determines the success that that person will have in the working world. Creating good bonds with the people in your life now will gauge what kind of people are in your life later on. So enjoy the comfort of good employability skills such as responsibility, time management, positive response and ease to change, and an all-around good personality!

What is graphic design and why is it important to communicate visually?
Graphic design is the use of visuals (text or image) to portray a message. Communicating visually is important, as it rids artists and companies of major language barriers, is quick and easy to comprehend, and results in impact.

What are the elements of design and how are they incorporated into a design?
The elements of design are shape, line, texture, space and value. All of these elements can aid in the readability and feel of the design based on curves, edges, color (shades and tints), and fluidity.

What is a vector-based design and how is it created?
A vector-based design is a design created on, for this course,  Adobe Illustrator and has the ability to be stretched or shrunken to any size and still maintain its quality (it is not pixel-based). These can be created using the shape tool, arrow tool, and pen tools.

How is color used effectively in a graphic design?
The right use of color can maximize the look and production, ease the mind (thus relaxing the body), and look snazzy.

What is a raster-based image and how is it created?
A raster-based image (also known as a pixel-based image) is an image made up of pixels and can be created using photoshop. With photoshop, it is possible to manipulate images and their pixels.

How does the manipulation of size and resolution effect digital images?

The larger the size of a digital image, the larger the resolution. Thus, the larger the resolution, the clearer (less pixelated) the image will be. 72 dpi are generally used for internet graphics, while 300 dpi are necessary to print images with clarity.

What are the principles of design and how can they be used within a design?
Repetition (similar images repeating to keep the composition interesting), proportion/scale (changing the focus, sizing elements to one another for emphasis), emphasis (large in size, color, texture, shape to focus the viewer on that element), balance (arranging heavy and light elements on the page), unity (to bring together the design, to make it all flow together neatly), variety (using similar images/elements in different sizes, colors, or shapes), rhythm (using lines and other elements to lead the viewer through the piece), and contrast (using similar items differently).

What is the function of type within a design?
Type may be used within a design to aid in color, texture, or emphasis. Used well, it can guide the viewer's eye through the piece and add  variety. Though it does not break language barriers, it is still very effective.

How do designers use a page layout program?
Designers use Adobe InDesign (a page layout program) to create layouts for magazines, mostly. This program allows the designer to place photos, text boxes (along with placeholder text for whatever the client's needs are), and design elements found in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

What steps does a designer take to design a page layout from concept to final product?
The creative process! From brainstorming and researching an idea, the designer then creates thumbnails of possible ideas, experiments in the software to create a design or one that is appropriate to the audience or client, and then steps back--literally--to critique and make any changes to the piece. And voila! That's all there is to it :-)

What are they key developments in the history of visual communication? How did these developments shape our industry?
Cave paintings, cuneiform, hieroglyphics, the Phoenician, Greek, and Roman alphabets, illuminated manuscripts, presses that could copy lines of text (such as the Gutenberg Press and the Linotype machine), the camera/film, and computers! These developments have allowed an easier way of communicating--faster and cheaper-- than before, and the technology has been advancing more rapidly than ever with the invention of the computer, especially.
